Gabrobocchia

[author unknown]

Est brilgum: toui slimici
In uabo tererotitant
Brogoui sunt macresculi
Momi rasti strugitant.

"Fuge Gabrobocchia, fili mi
Qui fero lacerat morsu:
Diffide Iubiubae aui
Es procul ab Unguimanu."

Uorpalem ensem extulit;
Hostem quaesiuit manximum
Tumtumi stirpi astitit
Et extudit consilium.

Subtectim consultante eo
En, Gabrobocchia flammifer
Ex luco sprinxit tulgido
Perbullans usque ugriter.

Tum semel, bis et iterum
Uorpale ferrum pupugit.
Necati caput exanimum
Citumphans retro rettulit.

"Num Gabrobocchia periit?
Gaudiferum amplectar te!
Dies frabiosus! graustussit!"
Suffremuit praehilare.

Est brilgum: toui slimici
In uabo tererotitant
Brogoui sunt macresculi
Momi rasti strugitant.

Justin B Rye (jbr@xibalba.demon.co.uk), who sent in this translation, writes:

I can't be sure that I've accurately reproduced the punctuation of the original, and I'm suspicious about that j-less, v-less transcription, but I was doing A-level Latin when I ran into this so I should hope the content is otherwise trustworthy.

Unfortunately, I have little or no evidence as to its origin; all I can say for sure is that I came across it somewhere a dozen or so years ago and copied it into the flysheets of the most appropriate book I had to hand--my German edition of Winnie Ille Pu. Maybe I found it in a book of my (late) uncle's, Norwich's Christmas Crackers (was that the name?). That certainly contained at least Le Jaseroque" and Der Jammerwoch".

So--can anyone help out with tracking down more info about this version? Author and date of translation/first publication, at least? --kl
